JMS deploys Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine

Dear Colleagues,

We take this opportunity to thank you all for the great response to the call to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The exercise has been running since 23rd March at UNON and has been supported by the UN System and the Kenya Government vaccination drives.

We would like to inform UN personnel, dependents, and household members, sponsored iNGO personnel and UN contractors that UNON JMS has been designated as a Moderna Vaccination center by the Ministry of Health.

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is an mRNA vaccine administered to persons 18 years of age and older, in 2 doses 28 days apart. Based on clinical trials, it has been shown to be 94.1% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection in people who received two doses and had no evidence of being previously infected (CDC.gov). The vaccine has received WHO Emergency Use Authorization and has a good safety record with minimal side effects and no severe effects noted so far. See the Moderna Fact sheet here.

The Moderna vaccine is available at JMS effective Thursday 2nd September 2021 and the administration is open to personnel, dependents, and household members, sponsored iNGO personnel and UN contractors who have not received any vaccination for COVID-19 so far. Recording and issuance of Moderna vaccine certificate will be based on the Government of Kenya MOH Chanjo portal https://portal.health.go.ke/.

The Moderna vaccine will only be available to those who have not received any other COVID-19 vaccine type as an initial dose. This is because mixing of different vaccine types at this time is not approved in Kenya and recording of a different vaccine type for 1st and 2nd dose is not permissible in the MOH Chanjo platform.

For those who have recently received a first dose of the Astra Zeneca vaccine at UNON JMS and are due for their second dose, we would like to notify you that it is temporarily out of stock. We have assurances that 2nd doses of Astra Zeneca vaccine will be made available for re-stock, and you will be notified in due course. Your patience will be appreciated. For those who may urgently require their 2nd dose of Astra Zeneca vaccine, you may still contact JMS for the latest information update on the re-stock, or for possible referral to other sites in Kenya where the dose may be available from time to time.

Thank you.
